How to play Sedecordle

Sedecordle gives you 16 hidden five-letter words, one per board, and 21 guesses to find them all. The name comes from sedecim, Latin for sixteen. You type one word and it goes on all 16 boards at once. Each board then colors it against its own word: green for a letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter that is in the word in another spot, gray for a letter that is not in it at all.

Solve a board and it locks, so your next guesses only count on the boards still open. Sixteen boards and 21 guesses leaves five to spare, the same five extra guesses every game in the family gets. Use all 21 with boards still open and the round ends, with each missing word shown under its board.

Sixteen boards will not fit on a phone at a readable size, so they scroll above a keyboard that stays in place: two or three across on a phone, eight across on a laptop. A key goes gray once its letter is ruled out on every board you have not solved yet.

Sedecordle strategy: 16 boards, 21 guesses

Sixteen boards is the middle of the ladder. There are enough boards that a good opener pays off many times over, and few enough that you can still keep track of each one. Here is how we play it.

• Spend three guesses on letters. CRANE, SPLIT and DOUGH share no letters and test 15 of the most useful ones on all 16 boards. A fourth scouting word is rarely worth it here: with five spare guesses, three openers still leave two for trouble later. See our best starting words for other sets.
• Solve with a second purpose. When two boards are both ready, solve first the one whose word uses letters you have not tried yet. That guess finishes one board and scouts the other 15 at the same time.
• Dodge letter traps. A board showing _ATCH could be BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH or WATCH, and trying them one at a time burns your spares. A word like CLIMB tests four of those first letters in one go, and the other boards still get its clues.
• Know your margin. Guesses left minus boards left is how many guesses you can spend on a word that cannot be an answer. Check it after every solve, and once it is zero, every guess has to finish a board.
