How to use the Letter Boxed solver
- Type the three letters of the top side, then the right, bottom and left sides.
- Press Solve the box. The shortest solutions come first, everyday words first.
- Below them is every valid word, the ones that cover the most letters first.
- Want a hint only? Pick one long word from the list and find the rest of the chain yourself.
Letter Boxed rules the solver follows
- Words have at least three letters and use only the letters on the box.
- Two letters in a row cannot come from the same side.
- Each new word starts with the last letter of the word before it.
- Letters can be used more than once. The puzzle is solved when every letter has been used.
Tips for solving in fewer words
- Start with the awkward letters. Rare letters like J, Q, X and Z have few words. Find one that uses them and build the chain around it.
- Watch the last letter. A word ending in E, S or T leaves you many next words. A word ending in a rare letter can trap you.
- Go long. Long words that zigzag between sides cover more letters, which is what a two-word solution needs.
More letter puzzles: the Spelling Bee solver finds every word from seven letters, and the anagram solver uses all of your letters. For more daily games, see games like Wordle.
Frequently asked questions
- How does the Letter Boxed solver work?
- It first lists every word the box allows: words of three or more letters that use only the 12 letters and never take two letters in a row from the same side. Then it chains those words, each starting with the last letter of the one before, and keeps the shortest chains that use all 12 letters.
- Can every Letter Boxed puzzle be solved in two words?
- Most daily puzzles can, and the solver shows two-word solutions whenever they exist. If there is none in its word list, it shows three-word solutions instead.
- Why does the puzzle reject a word from the solver?
- The New York Times uses its own word list for Letter Boxed and leaves out many rare words. Our list is a full word game dictionary. Solutions made only of everyday words are listed first and are the safest to try.
- In which order do I type the letters?
- Clockwise, starting at the top left: the top side left to right, the right side top to bottom, the bottom side right to left and the left side bottom to top. Only which letters share a side matters, so the order within a side does not change the answers.
- Is this the official Letter Boxed?
- No. Letter Boxed is a New York Times game. Vowelkit is an independent site, and this tool works for any 12 letters you type.
